The West African Monetary Agency (WAMA), in partnership with the African Development Bank (AfDB), implemented a Technical Assistance project to harmonize payment systems across ECOWAS. In support of this effort, a Project Implementation Unit (PIU) was established and trained through a 3-day capacity-building workshop held from 22 to 24 April 2026 in Freetown, Sierra Leone. The training aimed at strengthening the PIU’s ability to manage AfDB-funded projects by focusing on procurement procedures, disbursement processes, and financial management requirements.
During the sessions, participants reviewed the roles and responsibilities of the Project Implementation Team (PIT), identified existing capacity gaps, and discussed measures to ensure smooth project implementation. The training also provided detailed guidance on disbursement processes, including payment methods, preparation of required forms, and submission of supporting documents. Emphasis was placed on accuracy, compliance with AfDB guidelines, and maintaining proper records to ensure efficient fund disbursement and accountability.
The final part of the training focused on AfDB procurement policies and procedures, highlighting the importance of proper planning, transparency, and adherence to established rules. Participants were guided through the processes for recruiting consultants and managing contracts, while also addressing risks such as conflict of interest and mis procurement. Overall, the training further enhanced the technical capacity of the PIU, equipping members with the knowledge and tools needed to effectively implement the EPSS project in line with AfDB standards.
