WAMA RELOCATES TO NEW HEADQUARTERS
The Authorities of Sierra Leone have relocated the headquarters of the West African Monetary Agency (WAMA) from 11/13 ECOWAS Street, Freetown to 1K Scan Drive off Spur Road, Freetown. The former headquarters was constructed from contributions made by Member Central Banks of ECOWAS in 1991/92 for the erstwhile West African Clearing House (WACH).
The headquarters building was officially inaugurated on 28 November 1996, by which date WACH had been replaced by WAMA. The new Headquarters building is a six (6) storey building befitting an international organisation charged with the mandate of monitoring and coordinating the implementation of the ECOWAS Monetary Cooperation Programme (EMCP).
In a related development and pursuant to a directive by the Committee of Governors of Central Banks of ECOWAS Member States, at its fifty-third ordinary meeting held in Dakar-Senegal on February 21, 2019, Management of WAMA handed over custody of the WAMA building located at 11-13 ECOWAS street, Freetown, to the Sierra Leonean Authorities. The official handing over ceremony which took place on Friday 22nd March 2019, was attended by the Governor of the Bank of Sierra Leone Professor Kelfala M. Kallon, the Deputy Governor Dr. Ibrahim L. Stevens and Mrs Mary May Kargbo, Director, Project Management Department. Also present were Mr Momodou Bamba Saho, the Director General of WAMA, Mr Samuel Adu-Duodo and Dr. Abdulsalam Abidemi Sikiru, Director of Multilateral Surveillance and Director of Research and Statistics respectively, Abdoulie Ceesay, Head of Audit, Olukemi T Lawal, Head of Administration, and Edwin Osafoh Legal Counsel. At the ceremony the Director General of WAMA thanked the Governor and the Bank of Sierra Leone for the efforts in relocating the Headquarters of WAMA.
