THE DIRECTOR GENERAL OF THE WEST AFRICAN MONETARY AGENCY (WAMA), MR. BOIMA S. KAMARA, PAYS A COURTESY CALL ON THE GOVERNOR OF THE BANK OF SIERRA LEONE, DR. IBRAHIM LAHAI STEVENS

On 28 January 2025, the newly appointed Director General of the West African Monetary Agency (WAMA), Mr. Boima S. Kamara, paid a courtesy call on the Governor of the Bank of Sierra Leone (BSL), Dr. Ibrahim Lahai Stevens. The meeting was also attended by the First Deputy Governor in charge of monetary policy, Dr. Joseph Ansu Tucker, Directors of departments and other senior officials of the BSL. DG Kamara was accompanied by Dr. Gradé Momèle Kipré and Dr. Mawuli Gaddah, the Directors of Financial Integration Department and Multilateral Surveillance Department, respectively.
DG Kamara expressed appreciations to the Government of the Republic of Sierra Leone for the supports and the warm hospitality extended to WAMA over the years. He highlighted the difficulties of the Member States in meeting the macroeconomic convergence criteria in the face of the multiple shocks that have disrupted economic activities in recent times. He also took the opportunity to outline his vision for WAMA, including fast-tracking the implementation of key activities on the Roadmap for the Lunch of the ECO, building strategic partnerships with Member Central Banks and other stakeholders, and constructing a robust strategic communication system for awareness creation on the ECOWAS single currency programme. He indicated that these will be clearly outlined in his 4-Year Strategic Plan for the Agency to be rolled out soon.
Governor Stevens, on his part, extended heartfelt congratulations to DG Kamara for his well-deserved appointment. He noted that, DG Kamara unanimous endorsement by the Committee of Governors did not come as surprise to him. Given his vast experience in regional integration, both at the Central Bank of Liberia and the Ministry of Finance of Liberia, he is confident that DG Kamara will live up to the task. Governor Stevens indicated that despite the challenges in meeting the convergence criteria, top priority was given to trade integration which can bring immense benefits to the people in the Community. Governor Stevens embraced the idea of the 4-Year Strategic Plan and pledged BSL supports towards this process. Finally, Governor Stevens reiterated Sierra Leone’s unwavering commitment to the ECOWAS regional integration agenda as well as its support to WAMA.
On his part, the 1st Deputy Governor, Dr. Tucker expressed confidence in DG Kamara’s success at WAMA given his rich experience in the region. He indicated that policy harmonisation and statistical harmonisation are some of the low hanging fruits which WAMA could focus on. Other directors also took turns to congratulate DG WAMA and wished him success at WAMA.
