On 14 January 2025, the newly appointed Director General of the West African Monetary Agency (WAMA), Mr. Boima S. Kamara, paid an official visit to the Headquarters of the ECOWAS Bank for Investment and Development (EBID), as part of his goal to strengthen collaboration and foster cohesion with key partners in the ECOWAS region. He was warmly received by EBID President, Dr. George A. Donkor, who extended heartfelt congratulations on Mr. Kamara’s appointment. Applauding the DG extensive expertise in macroeconomic management and finance, combined with his background in regional integration, Dr. Donkor expressed confidence that Mr. Kamara would guide WAMA to new heights.

The President pledged unalloyed support to WAMA, voicing readiness to collaborate in evidence generation through research and statistics to foster informed macroeconomic analysis and policy-making throughout the ECOWAS sub-region. He underscored the importance of enduring partnerships in achieving shared objectives of economic integration and prosperity. By aligning both institutions’ efforts, Dr. Donkor believes the region will benefit from coordinated strategies that bolster development and growth.

Expressing gratitude, Mr. Kamara acknowledged EBID’s significant contributions to infrastructure development and private-sector investment in ECOWAS. However, he highlighted the urgency of increasing visibility through public awareness about EBID’s operations, intimating the time has come to change the narrative and rebrand the Bank’s critical role in supporting investments in public infrastructure and in the private sector across West Africa: West Africans making known the success story of West African institutions to the West African people and businesses. He also stressed that many private sector actors remain unaware of available investment opportunities in EBID; the people of West Africa, by extension not only large businesses but SMEs, need to know and must be told.

To address these challenges, DG Kamara committed to enhancing EBID’s visibility and underscored WAMA’s responsibility to promote understanding of economic integration benefits among key stakeholders. Under his leadership, WAMA will champion stronger outreach and collaboration, ensuring that ECOWAS citizens are informed about the roles and impact of crucial institutions like EBID, ultimately fostering deeper regional integration and sustainable prosperity as well as laying the foundation for a region-wide acceptability of the policies and programs being implemented by the ECOWAS Commission, WAMI, and WAMA.
